Finding "absolute north" without compass

rubydeez@yahoo.com asks:

Question

How do you determine absolute north without a compus? I have a general idea but I want to be more precise.
Also, in an apartment, would the location of the front door indicate the direction that the living unit is facing?

Thank you.

Answer

You are looking for true north, which is akin to the zenith on the imaginary celestial sphere? Look for the polestar, which is currently Polaris.

For feng shui you determine the orientation of a structure according to the local magnetic field intensity and dip, not “absolute north.”

You must use a compass to determine the orientation of the building. There is no way to read the geomagnetic field without a compass. That is why the compass was invented and why it is still in use!

Do you know how to use a Luopan? Do you know how to interpret a Western compass to match the readings from a Luopan?

If you don’t know how to use a compass or a Luopan, don’t set yourself up for disaster by trying any of this. Hire a competent practitioner.

The location of the front door may have nothing to do with the sitting or facing of the unit. You use Yin Yang Theory to determine sitting and facing, along with some other heuristics.

If you do not understand the criteria for sitting and facing, do not attempt feng shui analysis yourself unless you are prepared to accept the consequences.
